Virginia Child Support Calculator
Virginia's child support guideline in Va. Code § 20-108.2 is an income-shares model built on both parents' gross income. The current schedule took effect on July 2025 and runs to $42,500 of combined monthly income. This calculator follows the court worksheets: the sole custody worksheet, and the shared custody worksheet when each parent has the children more than 90 days a year.

This is a guideline estimate under Va. Code § 20-108.2 for informational purposes only — it is not legal advice and not a substitute for the official worksheet or a family-law attorney. Courts can deviate from guideline amounts based on statutory factors, and inputs like income determination or imputed income are ultimately decided by the court.

Gross income and the schedule
Virginia uses gross income from all sources, adjusted for spousal support paid or received, support for other children, and half of self-employment tax; this calculator takes the adjusted figure as entered. Combined monthly gross income is matched to the schedule for one to 6 children: every income up to $350 has the same amount, then the schedule steps by $50, and amounts between rows are extrapolated. Above $42,500 a month ($510,000 a year), 2.6%–5.0% of the income above $42,500 is added, depending on the number of children.
Sole and shared custody
With sole custody, the basic obligation, the children's health, dental and vision coverage, and the custodial parent's work-related child care are added and split by income share; the noncustodial parent deducts coverage they pay directly. When the parent with fewer days has the children more than 90 days a year, the shared custody worksheet multiplies the schedule amount by 1.4, gives each parent the share matching the other parent's days, adds each parent's own coverage and child care to what the other owes, and nets the two. The lower of the shared and sole amounts is paid, unless the shared calculation reverses who pays, in which case the shared amount stands.
Rounding, minimum orders and deviations
The court worksheets round every monthly figure to the nearest dollar, and this calculator does the same. Virginia also presumes a minimum order (the statute calls it the statutory minimum) unless an exemption applies, and when a parent's gross income is at or below 150% of the federal poverty level the court may decide whether sole or shared support is more appropriate; neither rule is applied here. A court may deviate from the guideline amount with written findings under § 20-108.1.
Frequently asked questions
Does Virginia use gross or net income for child support?
Gross income from all sources, including wages, bonuses, self-employment profit, rental income, Social Security and spousal support received. Public assistance, SSI and child support received are excluded. Spousal support paid, support paid for other children and half of self-employment tax are deducted.
How many days is shared custody in Virginia?
More than 90 days a year with the parent who has fewer days. A day is a 24-hour period; an overnight shorter than 24 hours counts as half a day for each parent. At 90 days or fewer, the sole custody worksheet applies with no adjustment for the other parent's time.
Why is the shared custody amount multiplied by 1.4?
The 1.4 multiplier reflects the extra cost of keeping two homes for the children. Each parent's share of the larger amount is weighted by the time the children spend with the other parent, and the two obligations are netted.
What if combined income is above $42,500 a month?
The schedule ends at $42,500 ($510,000 a year). Above it, the statute adds a percentage of the excess to the $42,500 amount: 2.6%–5.0% for one to six children.
Are health insurance and child care included?
Yes. The cost of health, dental and vision coverage for the children and the custodial parent's work-related child care are added to the basic obligation and split by income share. Unreimbursed medical and dental expenses are split by income share separately and are not part of the monthly amount.
What does this calculator leave out?
Income adjustments, the presumptive minimum order and its exemptions, the low-income rule for shared custody, split custody and different arrangements for different children, credits for disability benefits paid to the child, and deviations under § 20-108.1.
