Utah Child Support Calculator

Utah's child support guidelines, now in Utah Code Title 81, Chapter 6, are an income-shares model built on both parents' gross income. The current tables apply to orders first entered on or after January 2023. This calculator follows the court worksheets for sole and joint physical custody, including the low income table, and splits health insurance premiums and work-related child care equally as the statute requires.

This is a guideline estimate under Utah Code §§ 81-6-204 to 81-6-209, 81-6-304 to 81-6-305 for informational purposes only — it is not legal advice and not a substitute for the official worksheet or a family-law attorney. Courts can deviate from guideline amounts based on statutory factors, and inputs like income determination or imputed income are ultimately decided by the court.

Adjusted gross income and the base table

Utah starts from gross income from almost any source, limited for earnings to one full-time job, then subtracts alimony and child support previously ordered and paid; this calculator takes the adjusted figure as entered. Combined adjusted gross income is matched to the base combined child support obligation table for one to 6 children. Below $1,951, and wherever the table shows no amount, the base obligation is $0. Above $100,000 a month ($1,200,000 a year) the court sets an appropriate amount that cannot be lower than the top row. Income and award figures are rounded to the nearest dollar.

Sole and joint physical custody

With sole physical custody, the parent without custody pays their percentage of the base obligation. If that parent earns less than $2,450 a month, the low income table gives an amount based on their income alone, and the lower of the two applies; the award is never less than $30. Joint physical custody applies when each parent has the children more than 30% of the year. The parent with fewer overnights takes their share of the base obligation and subtracts 0.0027 of the base obligation for each overnight from 111–130 and 0.0084 for each overnight above 130. If the result is negative, the other parent pays that amount.

Health insurance and child care

Utah splits the premium for the children's portion of health insurance and reasonable work-related child care equally, not by income. The calculator adds half of what the receiving parent pays and credits half of what the paying parent pays. Uninsured medical and dental costs are also shared equally as they arise. For orders entered or modified on or after January 1, 2027, a new minimal child care award from a separate table also applies; it is not part of this calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Does Utah use gross or net income for child support?

Gross income, before taxes, from almost any source, with earned income limited to one full-time job. Means-tested benefits such as Family Employment Program cash assistance, SSI and SNAP are excluded. Alimony and child support previously ordered and actually paid are subtracted.

How many overnights is joint physical custody in Utah?

More than 30% of the year with each parent, with both parents contributing to the children's expenses. The joint formula only starts reducing support at the 111th overnight, and the reduction is steeper above 130 overnights.

What is the minimum child support in Utah?

$30 a month in a sole physical custody case. For a paying parent earning less than $2,450 a month, the low income table sets amounts based on that parent's income alone, and the lower of the low income amount and the regular share applies.

What if combined income is above $100,000 a month?

The base table ends at $100,000 of combined income ($1,200,000 a year). Above it, the court orders an appropriate and just amount case by case, but not less than the top row for the number of children.

How are health insurance and child care split in Utah?

Equally. Each parent pays half of the premium for the children's portion of health insurance and half of reasonable work-related child care, regardless of income. The parent who pays the provider can receive credit against the base award or recover the other parent's half.

What does this calculator leave out?

Income adjustments, imputed income, split custody, the reduction for extended parent-time, the limits on child care when support would exceed half the obligor's income, uninsured medical costs, more than six children, and the minimal child care award for orders from 2027. The Office of Recovery Services calculator produces the official worksheets.
