Indiana Child Support Calculator

Indiana's income-shares guideline works in weekly amounts: it adds both parents' weekly adjusted income, reads the basic obligation from the Indiana Supreme Court's Guideline Schedules, adds work-related child care and the children's health insurance premium, and splits the total by income share. The paying parent then gets a parenting time credit from 52 overnights a year. This calculator follows the Child Support Obligation Worksheet and the Parenting Time Credit Worksheet with the schedule amended in May 2024.

This is a guideline estimate under Indiana Child Support Rules and Guidelines for informational purposes only — it is not legal advice and not a substitute for the official worksheet or a family-law attorney. Courts can deviate from guideline amounts based on statutory factors, and inputs like income determination or imputed income are ultimately decided by the court.

Weekly adjusted income

Indiana starts from each parent's weekly gross income, then subtracts any credit for subsequent-born children, support paid for prior-born children and court-ordered maintenance to reach weekly adjusted income (this calculator takes weekly gross income as entered and does not model those deductions). Annual amounts are divided by 52. Combined weekly adjusted income under $100 falls below the schedule, and the court sets support case by case.

The parenting time credit

The Parenting Time Credit Worksheet reads two fractions from Table PT for the paying parent's annual overnights: TOTAL (the parent's expected spending during parenting time) and DUPLICATED (costs both households carry, such as housing). The credit is the basic obligation times TOTAL, less the parent's income share of the basic obligation times DUPLICATED. It starts at 52 overnights (alternate weekends) and rises steeply; 181–183 overnights is equally shared parenting time.

Child care and health insurance

Work-related child care and the weekly cost of the children's portion of health insurance premiums are added to the basic obligation, so both parents share them by income. The parent who actually pays either expense then receives a credit for the full amount on the worksheet, which is why the calculator asks who pays each one.

Frequently asked questions

Does Indiana use gross or net income for child support?

Gross income. Indiana's worksheet starts from each parent's weekly gross income and allows only a few deductions (subsequent-born children, prior-born children's support and court-ordered maintenance) to reach weekly adjusted income. Taxes are not deducted, because the schedule's support amounts already build in an average tax factor.

How do overnights change Indiana child support?

Through the parenting time credit. Below 52 overnights a year there is no automatic credit. From 52 overnights, Table PT gives fractions of the basic obligation that grow with time: at the standard Parenting Time Guidelines schedule (about 96–100 overnights) TOTAL is 0.253 and DUPLICATED 0.158 of the basic obligation, and at 181–183 overnights parenting time is treated as equally shared.

What if parents share time equally in Indiana?

The court designates one parent to pay the controlled expenses (clothing, school costs, ordinary uninsured health care, personal care). The other parent then receives the parenting time credit, and the rest of the worksheet runs as usual, so the higher earner can still owe support.

What happens above $9,200 a week of combined income?

The Guideline Schedules end at $9,200 of combined weekly adjusted income and print a final row of percentages for higher incomes: 8.1% for one child up to 20.4% for eight. The calculator applies that percentage to the combined weekly income.

Can an Indiana court order a different amount?

Yes. The guideline amount is a rebuttable presumption: if the court finds it unjust, inappropriate, or one that denies the paying parent a means of self-support at a subsistence level, it must make a written finding with the factual basis for the deviation.

Is this calculator the official Indiana worksheet?

No. It follows the official Child Support Obligation Worksheet and Parenting Time Credit Worksheet for the common case, but not every line (prior-born or subsequent children, maintenance, post-secondary education, split custody). The Indiana Judicial Branch publishes its own calculator that produces the court forms.
