Local minimum wages in New York
New York sets its minimum wage by region in state law, not by city ordinance. The Department of Labor says the rate depends on where the employee does the work, whatever the location of the employer's main office. New York City means the Bronx, Queens, Richmond, Kings and New York counties; Long Island and Westchester County are paid the same rate as the city.
How the New York minimum wage is set
New York's minimum wage can rise each year with inflation, but the law has "off-ramps" that stop an automatic increase. The Department of Labor says one off-ramp condition was met for 2027, so there is no inflation-based increase on January 1, 2027. The home care aide rate is the exception: it is adjusted for inflation but capped at $3.00 above the standard minimum wage. The Department's page also notes that Governor Hochul is proposing to change the off-ramp provisions so workers would receive the inflation-based increase; the figures here are the ones in force.
