Health FSA projected — dependent care already final

FSA Contribution Limits for 2027 (Projected)

Two accounts, two very different levels of certainty. The health FSA limit rides the IRS's autumn inflation procedure, which has not been published for 2027 yet — so the figure below is a ustax.tools trend estimate, labelled throughout. The dependent care cap needs no estimate at all: Congress fixed it in statute and never attached an inflation adjustment to it.

Health FSA: 2026 confirmed vs 2027 projected

Item 2026 (confirmed) 2027 (projected) Change
Health FSA salary-reduction limit $3,400 $3,450 $50
Maximum carryover into the next plan year $680 $690 $10

Confirmed column: IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32 §4.15. Projected column: a ustax.tools estimate, stepped down to a whole §125(i)(2) increment. Employers may set a lower plan limit than the statutory ceiling.

Dependent care FSA — already settled for 2027

Everything else on this page is an estimate. This part is not. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act rewrote the dependent care exclusion in 2026 — the first permanent change to it since 1986 (a one-year, pandemic-era increase for 2021 under IRS Notice 2021-26 / ARPA §9632 aside) — and left it as a plain dollar figure with no inflation clause attached. Until Congress amends it again, every future year repeats the same number.

Most filers

$7,500 excludable from wages for qualifying dependent care.

Married filing separately

$3,750 — exactly half the standard amount.

A separate earned-income ceiling can bite before the statutory cap does: your reimbursement cannot exceed your own earned income, or your spouse's if that is lower. Model it on the dependent care FSA calculator, and weigh it against the dependent care credit, which you cannot claim on the same dollars.

Methodology — how the health FSA projection was built

No named forecaster had published 2027 cafeteria-plan figures when this page was written; those September "first look" reports need CPI data that is not out yet. So ustax.tools built a trend estimate instead: the confirmed 2026 figure was scaled up by 2.27% — the pace at which comparable indexed federal thresholds genuinely travelled between 2025 and 2026 — and the result stepped down to a whole $50 increment exactly as IRC §125(i)(2) directs. Because that statute rounds down in coarse steps, the answer was then stress-tested against three years of published limits to confirm the whole plausible range still lands on $3,450. It is an extrapolation rather than a real computation: the readings that would settle it are not released until September.

Other 2027 figures

Some 2027 numbers are already official and some are not — worth knowing which is which before you plan around them:

Frequently asked questions

What is the FSA contribution limit for 2027?

Not announced yet. This page projects $3,450 for the health FSA salary-reduction limit, up $50 from the confirmed $3,400 in 2026. That is a ustax.tools trend estimate, not an IRS figure — the agency normally publishes the real number in a revenue procedure around October or November 2026. The dependent care side is different: that cap is $7,500 for 2027 as a matter of law, with no estimate involved.

Why is the health FSA projection a firm number rather than a coin flip?

Because the rounding rule was worked backwards rather than guessed. Section 125(i)(2) increases a $2,500 base by a cost-of-living adjustment and rounds the increase DOWN to the next lowest $50, so the published figure always lags the true index and sits somewhere inside a band. Pinning that band with three consecutive published limits — $3,200 for 2024, $3,300 for 2025 and $3,400 for 2026 — narrows the underlying index enough that the entire remaining range still rounds down to $3,450. Landing on $3,500 instead would take an adjustment of roughly 2.7% or more, against a trend nearer 2.27%.

How much can I carry over from a 2027 health FSA?

A projected $690, up from the confirmed $680. The carryover maximum is not separately announced — it is 20% of the salary-reduction limit, a ratio that holds exactly across every published pair the IRS has issued. So the carryover projection inherits the limit projection rather than being estimated on its own. Your employer chooses whether to offer a carryover at all, a grace period instead, or neither; the statute only caps the carryover it may offer.

Is the dependent care FSA limit going up in 2027?

No — and that is certain, not projected. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (P.L. 119-21, § 70404) raised the IRC § 129 exclusion to $7,500 ($3,750 if you are married filing separately) beginning in 2026, the first permanent change since 1986 (a one-year, pandemic-era increase for 2021 under IRS Notice 2021-26 / ARPA §9632 aside). Section 129 contains no inflation-indexing provision whatsoever, so the amount simply stays put until Congress moves it again. Anyone quoting a higher 2027 dependent care figure is guessing.

Can I fund a health FSA and a dependent care FSA in the same year?

Yes — they are separate accounts under separate Code sections with separate ceilings, so a single employee could shelter up to a projected $10,950 across both in 2027. They cover different costs: the health FSA reimburses medical, dental and vision expenses for you and your dependents, while the dependent care FSA reimburses daycare, preschool and after-school care that lets you work. Money cannot move between them.

Why are the 2027 HSA limits already official when the FSA limits are not?

Different publication schedules for different statutes. HSA and high-deductible-plan figures come out roughly eighteen months early in their own spring revenue procedure — the 2027 numbers landed in Rev. Proc. 2026-24 in May 2026, so our HSA page carries confirmed figures rather than estimates. The § 125(i) health FSA limit rides the general autumn inflation procedure instead, which is still months away. That timing gap, not any legal difference, is why one page is official and this one is labelled projected.

When will the official 2027 FSA limit be announced?

Autumn 2026 is the usual window; last year's equivalent document landed in early October. Because most employers open enrollment after that point, staff normally get to make a 2027 election against a settled number rather than an estimate. We swap the figures here over on the day it appears.

The 2027 health FSA figures on this page are a PROJECTION — ustax.tools' own trend estimate, not an IRS or third-party forecast. The dependent care FSA amounts are not projected: IRC §129 is not inflation-indexed, so its 2027 cap is already fixed by statute.
