Frequently asked questions

How is taxable income estimated?

The calculator subtracts entered above-the-line adjustments from gross income to estimate adjusted gross income, then subtracts either the standard deduction or the itemized deduction entered.

Is taxable income the same as adjusted gross income?

No. Adjusted gross income is generally calculated before the standard or itemized deduction. Taxable income is calculated after that deduction and certain other deductions.

What standard deduction does this subtract?

For 2026 the standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers, $32,200 for married filing jointly and $24,150 for head of household. Selecting itemized instead subtracts the itemized total you enter in place of that amount.

Can taxable income be zero?

Yes. When adjustments and the deduction together exceed gross income, estimated taxable income floors at zero rather than going negative, and federal ordinary income tax is zero. Refundable credits and payroll tax are handled separately and can still apply.

Does this calculate every Form 1040 adjustment?

No. It is a planning estimate. Enter the total adjustments and itemized deductions you have already determined; use the Form 1040 tools for line-by-line filing work.
