Tax bracket FAQs

Does my top tax bracket apply to all my income?

No. Federal income tax is progressive. Each rate applies only to taxable income inside that bracket, so moving into a higher bracket never makes all earlier dollars subject to the higher rate.

Is my bracket based on gross income or taxable income?

Your bracket is based on taxable income after adjustments and either the standard deduction or itemized deductions. This finder subtracts entered above-the-line deductions and the standard deduction.

What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?

The marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar of taxable income. The effective rate is total federal income tax divided by income, so it is normally lower.
