Frequently asked questions
What does marginal tax rate mean?
It is the ordinary federal income tax rate applied to the last dollar inside your current bracket, not the rate applied to all income.
Will a raise make all my income use the higher bracket?
No. Only taxable income above the next bracket threshold uses the higher rate; earlier dollars remain in their existing bands.
When should I use marginal rate instead of effective rate?
Use the marginal rate for any forward-looking decision — a raise, a bonus, an extra pretax retirement contribution, or a Roth conversion — because it prices the next dollar. The effective rate answers what you paid overall and understates the tax on additional income.
Does the standard deduction affect my marginal rate?
Indirectly. The deduction reduces taxable income, which can place you in a lower bracket than your gross income suggests. For 2026 the standard deduction is $16,100 for a single filer and $32,200 for married filing jointly, so a filer whose income sits below that amount has a marginal ordinary-income rate of zero.
Is the tax on the next $1,000 always exactly my marginal rate?
Not in a full tax return. Credits, deductions, capital-gain stacking and phaseouts can change the result. This calculator isolates the ordinary income bracket schedule.
