How the weekly benefit is calculated

Pennsylvania does not use a formula you can apply yourself: your weekly benefit rate is read from the Rate and Amount of UC Benefits chart using your highest-quarter wages, and it should equal about one-half of your full-time weekly wage. The chart already includes the 2% reduction required by Act 144 of 2012.

The unemployment benefits calculator models California, Texas, New York, Florida and Ohio; for Pennsylvania, use the rules above or the agency's own estimate.

How long benefits last

Your maximum benefit amount is your weekly benefit rate times the number of credit weeks in your base year. You need at least 18 credit weeks to qualify, and the total can never exceed 26 times your weekly rate.

Waiting week

The first week of your benefit year in which you are otherwise eligible is the waiting week. It is not paid, but you must file a weekly certification for it to be paid for later weeks.

Is Pennsylvania unemployment taxable?

State: Pennsylvania does not tax unemployment compensation: the Department of Revenue lists it among income items never taxable as PA compensation.

Federal: Unemployment compensation is taxable on your federal return: the IRS says you generally must include in income all unemployment compensation you receive. Your state sends Form 1099-G showing what it paid, and you can choose to have federal income tax withheld by filing Form W-4V.

Federal tax is withheld only if you ask for it, so a year of benefits can leave a tax bill: the quarterly estimated tax calculator shows what to set aside.

How to apply

File your claim with the Department of Labor & Industry, Office of Unemployment Compensation. The notice it sends you with your weekly benefit amount is the official figure for your claim.
