How to use the result

The percentage is a screening number, not a benefit decision. Programs apply different years, income definitions and household rules. Use the dedicated Medicaid, ACA and SNAP tools for the next step.

Need the complete official table? The 2026 federal poverty guideline reference lists household sizes one through eight for all three regions and explains the ACA timing rule.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my federal poverty level percentage?

Divide annual household income by the HHS poverty guideline for your household size and region, then multiply by 100. For example, income of $66,000 divided by the 2026 contiguous-state family-of-four guideline of $33,000 equals 200% FPL.

Are Alaska and Hawaii FPL amounts different?

Yes. HHS publishes separate, higher schedules for Alaska and Hawaii. Select the region where the household lives instead of using the 48-state-and-DC schedule.

Does 138% FPL automatically mean I qualify for Medicaid?

No. The calculator shows the arithmetic threshold only. Medicaid eligibility also depends on state expansion status, eligibility category, MAGI rules, residency and other program requirements.

Which poverty guideline year does the ACA use?

Marketplace premium-tax-credit calculations generally use the poverty guideline in effect when open enrollment for that coverage year began. That commonly means the prior calendar year's guideline, not simply the newest HHS table.
