SSA-1099 box guide

SSA-1099 Box 5: Net benefits

Box 3 benefits paid minus Box 4 benefits repaid. This is the amount used to determine how much Social Security enters gross income.

How to use Box 5

Add Box 5 from every SSA-1099 and the Social Security-equivalent portion of any RRB-1099. Report total benefits on Form 1040 line 6a and the taxable portion on line 6b.

Example

A $24,000 Box 5 does not mean $24,000 is taxable. Depending on filing status and combined income, the taxable amount can range from $0 to at most 85% of the benefit.

Use this box in a calculation

A single SSA-1099 field does not determine the final tax result. Combine it with filing status, other income, tax-exempt interest, deductions, and other withholding.

What to check before filing

  • Use the combined-income formula; do not automatically multiply Box 5 by 85%.
  • Include a spouse’s benefit statements when filing jointly.
  • Tax-exempt municipal-bond interest still enters the combined-income calculation.
