ITIN Application and Renewal Guide
Use this only if you need a U.S. taxpayer identification number and are not eligible for a Social Security number.
Choose the submission path before mailing original documents
A current passport is the only stand-alone document that proves both identity and foreign status. Without one, combine permitted current documents; at least one generally must show a photograph unless the applicant is a young dependent.
The IRS says standard processing is about 7 weeks and rises to 9 to 11 weeks during January 15 through April 30 or for overseas applications. Mailed original documents should be returned within 60 days.
Frequently asked questions
Can someone eligible for an SSN get an ITIN instead?
No. Form W-7 is for a person who needs a U.S. tax identification number and is not eligible to receive an SSN.
Do I attach a tax return to Form W-7?
Usually yes. A new applicant attaches Form W-7 to the front of Form 1040 or 1040-NR unless a specific W-7 exception applies.
How long does an ITIN application take?
The IRS says about 7 weeks normally, or 9 to 11 weeks during peak tax season or when applying from overseas.
