Current: the rate each state's revenue department, comptroller, DMV or transportation department states on its own page, read on Oct 21, 2026; a
dash means the page could not be read or states no single rate. "In effect since" is shown only where the state's page dates the rate.
† A temporary suspension or tax holiday is in effect or announced; the rate shown is the standard one (see the notes).
FHWA: Highway Statistics 2024, Table MF-205, State Motor-Fuel Tax Rates (gasoline/gasohol and diesel). The table shows the
rates for motor fuel as of December 31 for each year, including inspection fees and environmental cleanup fees when these fees are targeted at highway fuel use, and include local taxes when these taxes are uniform across all the counties in the State. The unit is cents per gallon, as FHWA words state
fees in its companion Table MF-121T.
What each state's current figure covers, with the state's page
Alabama: Plus a 2 cent per gallon inspection fee on gasoline and on diesel at certain sales, and a 0.75 cent wholesale oil license on diesel sold at the rack. State page
Alaska: Highway rate; the page also lists a separate motor fuel surcharge of 0.95 cents per gallon. State page
Arizona: Diesel (use fuel) is 26 cents for heavy "use class" vehicles on highways and 18 cents for lighter vehicles. State page
Arkansas: Total rates for Oct 1, 2026 to Sep 30, 2027, including the wholesale tax; border-zone gasoline rates differ and a 0.3 cent environmental fee is added. State page
California: Excise rates, adjusted each July 1 for inflation. Sales tax on fuel is separate and not included. State page
Colorado: Excise tax only. The state also charges per-gallon fees (road usage fee, environmental response surcharge and others) listed on its Fees and Surcharges page, which are not included. State page
Connecticut: Gasoline rate is from the Connecticut General Statutes (Chapter 221, section 12-458). The diesel rate is recomputed each July 1 under section 12-458h and the DRS announcement could not be read from this network (portal.ct.gov times out), so diesel shows a dash. State page
Delaware: Published by the Division of Motor Vehicles, which administers the motor fuel and special fuel tax. State page
District of Columbia: Motor fuel tax of 23.5 cents plus the local transportation surcharge of 12.2 cents. The page lists the tax year that began Oct 1, 2025; the surcharge is adjusted each Oct 1 and the Oct 1, 2026 figure was not posted. State page
Florida: Total of the statewide components Florida publishes (excise, sales, ninth-cent or local option, inspection fee and the SCETS tax), not including local option taxes above the statewide minimum. State page
Georgia: Standard rates. Georgia suspended collection of the motor fuel excise tax from Sept 29, 2026, extended twice, now through Nov 30, 2026. State page
Hawaii: State portion only. Each county adds its own tax, so the highway totals are 32.5 (Honolulu), 40.0 (Maui), 39.0 (Hawaii County) and 33.0 (Kauai) cents. State page
Idaho: The State Tax Commission page (tax.idaho.gov) and the Idaho Code on legislature.idaho.gov time out from this network, so the page shows a dash.
Illinois: Rates for July 1 to Dec 31, 2026, after the July 1 inflation adjustment was suspended for six months by Public Act 104-0468. State page
Indiana: Gasoline license tax and special fuel license tax. A $0.01 per gallon oil inspection fee is added to both. State page
Iowa: Unblended gasoline and undyed diesel. Ethanol blends of E-15 or higher are $0.280 from July 1, 2026. State page
Kansas: Read from the Kansas statute (K.S.A. 79-34,141) on the Legislature site, because the Department of Revenue page could not be read from this network. The statute words these as rates "not less than" the figures, and K.S.A. 79-3408 imposes the tax at the rate computed under it. Special fuels is the diesel rate. State page
Kentucky: Excludes the 1.4 cent per gallon petroleum environmental assurance fee. State page
Louisiana: A $0.00125 per gallon inspection fee is separate. State page
Maine: From Maine Revenue Services excise bulletins dated March 2026. State page
Maryland: Combined applicable rate, which includes the sales and use tax equivalent and the cumulative inflation adjustment. State page
Massachusetts: Included in the retail price. State page
Michigan: Michigan ended its prepaid sales tax on motor fuel on Jan 1, 2026; the rate is adjusted for inflation each Jan 1. State page
Minnesota: Indexed each Jan 1; 32.8 cents from Jan 1, 2027 per the same table. State page
Mississippi: Steps to 27 cents on July 1, 2027. Undyed diesel; Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties add a seawall tax on gasoline. State page
Missouri: The Department of Revenue states one motor fuel tax rate; its FAQ applies the same rate to gasoline and clear diesel. State page
Montana: From Montana Code Annotated 15-70-403; the Department of Transportation rates page could not be served. A $0.0075 per gallon cleanup fee is separate. State page
Nebraska: Gasoline, gasohol, ethanol and undyed diesel. The rate is reset every Jan 1 and Jul 1. State page
Nevada: State tax only. Counties add their own gasoline and diesel taxes, and a cleanup fee of 0.75 cents applies. State page
New Hampshire: Road toll. Adding the oil discharge and oil pollution control fees brings the total to 23.746 cents per gallon. State page
New Jersey: Motor Fuels Tax of 10.5 cents (gasoline) and 13.5 cents (diesel) plus the Petroleum Products Gross Receipts Tax, which the Treasury resets each Jan 1 and which stays at 38.6 and 42.6 cents through Dec 31, 2026. State page
New Mexico: Special fuel also pays a petroleum products loading fee. State page
New York: Sum of the excise tax and the petroleum business tax in Publication 908 (cents per gallon). State and local sales taxes on fuel are separate and not included. State page
North Carolina: Standard rate. The motor fuel excise tax is suspended (0 cents) from Oct 10 through Nov 30, 2026 under Session Law 2026-62; the 0.25 cent inspection tax still applies. State page
North Dakota: Special fuel rate applies to fuel for licensed vehicles; dyed diesel for other uses is 4 cents. State page
Ohio: Standard rate. A 90-day tax holiday cuts both to $0.0001 per gallon from Oct 4, 2026 through Jan 2, 2027. State page
Oklahoma: Special fuels are $0.16; a $0.01 per gallon environmental assessment fee is separate. State page
Oregon: Gasoline is the motor vehicle fuel tax and diesel is the use fuel tax. Some cities and counties add local fuel taxes. State page
Pennsylvania: Liquid fuels (gasoline and gasohol) and fuels (undyed diesel) rates, which include the oil company franchise tax; reset each Jan 1. State page
Rhode Island: The division states one motor fuel tax rate. A $0.01 environmental fee is separate. Inflation indexing resumes July 1, 2027. State page
South Carolina: Motor fuel user fee. An environmental impact fee of 0.5 cents and an inspection fee of 0.25 cents per gallon are separate. State page
South Dakota: A 2 cent per gallon tank inspection fee is separate. State page
Tennessee: Undyed diesel. Other per-gallon petroleum fees are separate. State page
Texas: Per Texas Tax Code 162.102 (gasoline) and 162.202 (diesel). State page
Utah: Separate rate for July 1 to Dec 31, 2026; the rate from Jan 1, 2026 is $0.379. State page
Vermont: Gasoline only, for October to December 2026: the $0.121 per gallon tax plus the quarter's two assessments (infrastructure assessment 2 percent and fuel tax assessment 4 percent of the tax-adjusted retail price, each with a floor), which the DMV resets every quarter. The 1 cent petroleum distributor license fee is separate. Vermont diesel is taxed under a separate rate that could not be read, so diesel shows a dash. State page
Virginia: Excludes the storage tank fee of 0.2 cents per gallon. State page
Washington: Special fuel covers diesel and others. The rates rise by 2 percent each July 1 under state law. State page
West Virginia: The Tax Division page (tax.wv.gov) times out and the state code on code.wvlegislature.gov returns 403 from this network, so the page shows a dash.
Wisconsin: A 2 cent per gallon petroleum inspection fee is separate. State page
Wyoming: License tax of 23 cents plus an additional license tax of 1 cent per gallon; dyed diesel pays only the 1 cent. State page

How current are these rates?
The FHWA columns are the latest edition of Highway Statistics, with rates in effect on December 31 2024. Many states index their rates and
reset them on January 1 or July 1, so the current columns show what each state's own page stated on Oct 21, 2026. Check the state's page
before relying on a figure, since a state can change its rate or announce a suspension at any time. For other state-by-state comparisons see
compare state taxes and the

Frequently asked questions
Which state has the highest gas tax?
In FHWA's Table MF-205, California has the highest gasoline tax at 60 cents per gallon on December 31 2024. The five highest are California (60), Pennsylvania (58), Washington (49.4), Illinois (47), and Maryland (46).
Which state has the lowest gas tax?
Alaska has the lowest gasoline tax at 8 cents per gallon on December 31 2024. The five lowest are Alaska (8), Hawaii (16.0), New Mexico (17.0), Arizona (18), and Mississippi (18).
What is the average state gas tax?
FHWA's weighted state average, based on gross gallons taxed, is 29.70 cents per gallon for gasoline and 30.98 cents for diesel on December 31 2024.
Is diesel taxed more than gasoline?
It depends on the state. On December 31 2024, the diesel rate is higher than the gasoline rate in 19 of the 51 jurisdictions (the 50 states and DC), lower in 8, and the same in 24.
What do the state gas tax rates include?
FHWA says the table shows the tax rates for motor fuel as of December 31 for each year, and that the rates include inspection fees and environmental cleanup fees when these fees are targeted at highway fuel use, and include local taxes when these taxes are uniform across all the counties in the State. Sales taxes on fuel and county-level taxes that vary by county are not part of the figures.
Are these the current gas tax rates?
The 2024 columns are the rates FHWA reports in effect on December 31 2024, from Highway Statistics 2024, the latest edition posted. The current columns are the rates each state's own revenue department, comptroller, DMV or transportation department published, read on Oct 21, 2026. 4 states show a dash for gasoline or diesel because their page could not be read or states no single rate. States reset rates on January 1, July 1 or other dates, so confirm with the state before relying on a figure.
Why do the current rates differ from the FHWA figures?
FHWA prints each state's rate as of December 31, 2024. Many states index their rates to inflation or fuel prices and reset them on January 1 or July 1, so the state's own current figure can be higher or lower. A state's figure also can leave out fees or local taxes that FHWA includes, or the reverse; the notes under the table say what each state's figure covers.
