Florida Sales Tax Rate 2026

Florida has no state income tax, which makes sales tax the levy most residents actually notice. The state rate is uniform, but each county decides separately whether to add a discretionary surtax, and several add none — so the spread across the state is narrower than in California yet still real enough to matter on a large purchase.

Combined

6.5%–7.5%

Counties may levy a discretionary sales surtax on top of the state rate. The Department of Revenue puts current county surtaxes between 0.5% and 1.5%, and some counties impose none at all — so the combined rate depends entirely on which county the sale is sourced to.

What Florida taxes, and what it doesn't

County surtax is county-sourced

The surtax follows where the sale is sourced rather than where the seller is based. The Department of Revenue republishes the county-by-county table each November, and rates carry effective and expiration dates because many surtaxes are approved for a fixed term.

Rates that are not the general rate

Florida applies separate statutory rates to a few categories rather than the general rate — mobile homes, amusement machine receipts, and electricity each have their own figure, so a bill for those will not match the general rate.

Get the exact rate for an address

A statewide figure is a starting point, not a receipt. For the rate that actually applies to a specific address, use the state's own lookup — third-party rate tables disagree with each other and go stale between rate changes.

Frequently asked questions

Which Florida counties have no surtax?

Several do not levy one, and the list changes as surtaxes are approved or expire. Because many county surtaxes carry an expiration date, a county that charged one last year may not this year. The Department of Revenue republishes Form DR-15DSS each November with the current county table plus effective and expiration dates — that form, not a third-party lookup, is the authority.

Does the surtax apply to the whole purchase price?

Not always. Florida limits the discretionary surtax on certain large single-item sales, so on a big-ticket purchase the surtax portion can stop applying above a threshold while the state portion continues on the full amount. Check the current DR-15DSS instructions before assuming the combined rate applies to the entire price.
