Methodology

Rates are aggregate-derived from the Census Bureau's ACS 2024 5-year American Community Survey (total real-estate taxes paid ÷ total home value, by county). This is a statistical estimate, not a bill lookup — actual property tax bills vary by city, school district, and special-district levies layered on top of the county rate, and by any homestead, senior, veteran, or other exemptions you qualify for. Washington ranks #30 of 51 (including DC) by statewide average effective rate, where #1 is the highest.

Frequently asked questions

How much property tax will I pay in Washington?

The districts overlapping your parcel decide the combined rate, and your home's value does the rest. Select a Washington county above and enter any value — annual and monthly estimates from county medians follow.

How is property tax calculated in Washington?

Your county's assessor values the property, and each district serving it — county, city, school, fire, library, and others — contributes a levy. Their combined total against the assessed value is the annual bill.

Can I lower my Washington property tax bill?

Qualifying seniors and disabled homeowners can access exemption or deferral programs that reduce or postpone the tax, and county boards accept appeals when a valuation looks out of line with the market.

Are property taxes deductible?

For federal itemizers, yes — inside the capped SALT deduction. Since Washington levies no wage income tax, property and sales taxes are what residents typically claim; check the current federal cap.
