Washington Capital Gains Tax 2026
Estimate the state tax attributable to a gain, then separate it from the federal capital-gains calculation.
State-specific rule
The calculator applies a 7% rate on the first $1 million of taxable Washington gains and 9.9% above that tier, after the annual standard deduction ($278,000 for 2025). Washington had not yet published the 2026 standard deduction as of this writing, so the calculator carries the 2025 $278,000 figure forward for 2026 until DOR publishes the updated amount. Exempt assets and charitable deductions are not modeled.

Frequently asked questions
Does Washington have a lower rate for long-term capital gains?
Washington has no broad individual income tax, but it separately taxes covered Washington long-term capital gains after an annual deduction.
Does this include federal capital gains tax?
No. This page estimates the state layer. Use the federal capital gains calculator for the 0%, 15% or 20% long-term rate, ordinary short-term rates and possible 3.8% NIIT.
Why does other income change the result?
The gain can stack on top of other taxable income. In a progressive system, some or all of the gain may therefore fall into higher state brackets.
