Methodology

Rates are aggregate-derived from the Census Bureau's ACS 2024 5-year American Community Survey (total real-estate taxes paid ÷ total home value, by county). This is a statistical estimate, not a bill lookup — actual property tax bills vary by city, school district, and special-district levies layered on top of the county rate, and by any homestead, senior, veteran, or other exemptions you qualify for. Virginia ranks #28 of 51 (including DC) by statewide average effective rate, where #1 is the highest.

Frequently asked questions

How is property tax calculated in Virginia?

Your locality values the real estate and applies its adopted rate — a single local multiplication, though the rate and reassessment schedule differ from one county or city to the next. The calculator above uses the local median for estimating.

How much property tax will I pay in Virginia?

Locality choice is the dominant variable. With a Virginia county or city selected above, put the home's value in and median-based annual and monthly estimates return.

Can I lower my Virginia property tax bill?

Relief for qualifying seniors, disabled homeowners, and disabled veterans varies by locality but is widely offered, and local appeal channels exist for assessments that outpace the market. Ask your local commissioner or assessor about programs and deadlines.

Are property taxes deductible?

Yes under the federal SALT deduction if you itemize, observing the cap that governs the combined deduction. See the IRS for the current threshold.
