Form 1099-G FAQs

Is a state income-tax refund always taxable?

No. Taxability generally depends on whether deducting the prior-year state tax produced a federal tax benefit, including whether the taxpayer itemized.

Is unemployment compensation federally taxable?

It is generally included in federal income unless a specific law provides an exclusion for the year. Check current Form 1040 instructions.
