What this estimate includes

The calculation applies the SSA early-claiming reduction to the maximum 50% spousal amount and compares it with the spouse’s own age-adjusted retirement benefit.

Deemed filing, divorced-spouse eligibility, child-in-care benefits, family maximums, pensions, and exact claim-month rules require an SSA record review.

Spousal benefit questions

How much can a spouse receive from Social Security?

At the spouse's full retirement age, the maximum spousal benefit is generally 50% of the worker's primary insurance amount. Claiming earlier reduces the spousal amount.

Can a spouse receive their own benefit and a full spousal benefit?

No. SSA generally pays the person's own benefit first, then only enough spousal benefit to bring the total to the higher eligible amount.

Do spousal benefits grow after full retirement age?

No. Delayed retirement credits can increase a worker's own retirement benefit, but a spousal benefit does not grow after the spouse reaches full retirement age.
