Frequently asked questions

Which county rate applies to me?

Maryland local income tax follows where you lived, not where you worked. The rate is set by the county — or Baltimore City, which is treated as its own jurisdiction — in which you were a resident on the last day of the tax year. Moving between counties mid-year changes which rate applies for the whole year.

What local rates does this calculator cover?

The supported jurisdictions and their 2026 rates are: Montgomery County 3.20%, Baltimore City 3.20%, Baltimore County 3.20%, Howard County 3.20%, Harford County 3.06%, Kent County 3.30%, Talbot County 2.40%, Worcester County 2.25%. Verify your own county against the Maryland Comptroller rate table before filing, since counties can change their rate for a new tax year.

Do I file a separate county tax return?

No. Maryland local income tax is administered by the Comptroller and settled on your Maryland state return — there is no separate municipal return or municipal collector. Employers withhold state and local tax together using a combined withholding rate for your county.

Why are Anne Arundel and Frederick counties not listed?

Both counties use income-dependent local rate schedules rather than one flat rate, so a single-rate estimate would be wrong for many filers. They are deliberately excluded until the full bracketed schedule is modeled. Use the Comptroller rate table for those two counties.

Does this estimate include Maryland state income tax?

No. This is the local county piece only. Your total Maryland liability is the state tax on your Maryland taxable income plus this local amount, and federal tax sits on top of both.

Do nonresidents pay Maryland local income tax?

Nonresidents are not assigned a county rate, but Maryland charges nonresidents a special nonresident tax on Maryland-source income in place of the local tax. This calculator models resident county rates only.
