Louisiana Property Tax Calculator

Louisiana is organized into parishes rather than counties, and each parish assessor values property and applies the local millage rate set by the parish, municipalities, and school boards within it. A homestead exemption shields a substantial slice of a primary residence's assessed value from parish and most local taxes, which is a big reason many Louisiana homeowners owe relatively little. This page estimates typical parish-level bills — use the calculator above for your parish.

How property tax works in Louisiana

  • A parish assessor values your property — Louisiana uses parishes rather than counties as its primary local government unit.
  • The parish, municipalities, and school boards each set their own millage rate, applied to assessed value.
  • A homestead exemption shields a meaningful slice of a primary residence's value from most parish and local levies.

Methodology

Rates are aggregate-derived from the Census Bureau's ACS 2024 5-year American Community Survey (total real-estate taxes paid ÷ total home value, by county). This is a statistical estimate, not a bill lookup — actual property tax bills vary by city, school district, and special-district levies layered on top of the county rate, and by any homestead, senior, veteran, or other exemptions you qualify for. Louisiana ranks #39 of 51 (including DC) by statewide average effective rate, where #1 is the highest.

Frequently asked questions

How is property tax calculated in Louisiana?

A parish assessor values your property (Louisiana calls its counties 'parishes'), and the parish, any municipality, and the local school board each apply their own millage rate to that assessed value, after the homestead exemption is subtracted for a primary residence.

How much property tax will I pay in Louisiana?

It depends on your parish and whether you claim the homestead exemption, since Louisiana has no single statewide rate. Select your parish in the calculator above for an estimate.

Can I lower my Louisiana property tax bill?

The homestead exemption is the primary way Louisiana homeowners reduce their bill, shielding a meaningful portion of a primary residence's assessed value from most local levies. You can also appeal your assessment through the parish assessor.

Are property taxes deductible?

Yes — for itemizers, Louisiana property tax counts toward the federal SALT deduction, whose total is capped. Confirm the current limit with the IRS before filing.
