Kentucky Property Tax Calculator

Kentucky property tax gathers several local levies — county, city, and school district — onto one statement, each applied to the value on record for your home. Qualifying owner-occupants may claim homestead-type relief, and any owner can contest a valuation. Because levies differ across the state, this page estimates from county medians. Choose a Kentucky county above to see a typical annual and monthly figure.

How property tax works in Kentucky

  • A value is set for the property, and county, city, and school levies are each applied to it on one statement.
  • Homestead-type relief is available to qualifying owner-occupants.
  • Valuations can be contested through a local review process.

Methodology

Rates are aggregate-derived from the Census Bureau's ACS 2024 5-year American Community Survey (total real-estate taxes paid ÷ total home value, by county). This is a statistical estimate, not a bill lookup — actual property tax bills vary by city, school district, and special-district levies layered on top of the county rate, and by any homestead, senior, veteran, or other exemptions you qualify for. Kentucky ranks #31 of 51 (including DC) by statewide average effective rate, where #1 is the highest.

Frequently asked questions

How is property tax calculated in Kentucky?

The value on record for your home meets the levies adopted by your county, your city, and your school district; each is applied separately and the results are billed together. The calculator above condenses those layers into a county-median effective rate.

How much property tax will I pay in Kentucky?

Location within Kentucky is the main variable, since each county's mix of levies differs. Select your county above, add the home's value, and take the estimate — annual and monthly — based on that county's median.

Can I lower my Kentucky property tax bill?

Qualifying owner-occupants can claim homestead-type relief that removes part of the value from taxation, and a valuation that looks inflated can be contested locally. Both require acting within the windows printed on your notices.

Are property taxes deductible?

Yes, on an itemized federal return — property tax sits inside the SALT deduction, which federal law caps. Look up the cap in effect for your filing year with the IRS.
