Effective tax rate
Your 15.5% effective rate is above the national median of 10.5% for incomes $50k–$75k.
Based on IRS Statistics of Income data. Individual results vary.
Why this number?
FICA taxes ($3,978) are separate from your federal income tax ($4,060) — they fund Social Security and Medicare and aren't reduced by deductions.
For your income range ($50k–$75k), the national median effective rate is 10.5%. Your rate is 5.0pp above the median.
| Item | Per Period | Annual |
|---|---|---|
| Gross pay | $2,000 | $52,000 |
| Federal Income Tax | ($156) | ($4,060) |
| Social Security | ($124) | ($3,224) |
| Medicare | ($29) | ($754) |
| Take-home pay | $1,691 | $43,962 |
Medicare includes the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax your employer withholds on wages over $200,000 in a year, whatever your filing status. The tax you owe on your return (Form 8959) starts at $250,000 married filing jointly, $125,000 married filing separately, $200,000 for every other filing status, so it can differ from what is withheld.
For taxable income under $100,000, the IRS Tax Table you use to file prints one figure for each narrow income band ($25 or $50 wide), calculated at the middle of the band, so your return can differ from this exact bracket calculation by a few dollars.

How hourly pay and overtime are taxed
- Overtime counts as wages. It is added to the paycheck and withheld on like regular pay; there is no separate overtime tax rate.
- The workweek decides overtime. The federal rule counts hours over 40 in each fixed workweek, not hours per paycheck.
- Variable hours change withholding. Use your typical hours here, then compare against a real pay stub.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate an hourly paycheck?
Gross pay = hourly rate × regular hours + hourly rate × 1.5 × overtime hours. Then subtract federal income tax withholding, Social Security and Medicare (7.65% combined employee share), any state or local tax, and your pre-tax deductions. This calculator does every step for the pay frequency you pick.
How does overtime pay work?
Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees must be paid at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Overtime is counted per workweek, not per day or per pay period under federal law. Enter your overtime hours separately and the calculator pays them at 1.5x your rate.
How do I convert hours per week to annual pay?
Multiply weekly pay by 52. Weekly pay is your rate times regular hours, plus your rate times 1.5 times any overtime hours. At 40 hours a week with no overtime that is 40 × 52 hours a year; each regular hour you add or drop moves annual pay by 52 times your rate.
Is overtime taxed at a higher rate?
No. Overtime is ordinary wages and is withheld on like any other pay. A larger paycheck can look more heavily taxed because withholding is calculated as if each period's pay recurred all year, which can push the estimate into a higher bracket. Your actual tax is settled on your return. A temporary federal deduction for the overtime premium may reduce what you owe at filing; see the No Tax on Overtime calculator.
Why is my take-home lower than rate × hours?
Federal income tax withholding, 7.65% FICA, state and local taxes, and deductions such as a 401(k) or health premium all come out of gross pay. Pick your state and filing status above to see each line.
Does this calculator handle daily or state overtime rules?
No. It applies the federal weekly rule only. Some states add daily overtime or other premiums; check your state labor department if you work in one of them.
What if I am salaried?
