Frequently asked questions

Do I need an estimated payment after a capital gain?

Possibly. A payment may be needed when withholding and credits will not cover the smaller of 90% of current-year tax or the applicable prior-year safe harbor.

What is the 110% safe harbor?

The prior-year target is generally 110% instead of 100% when prior-year AGI exceeded $150,000, or $75,000 for married filing separately.

What if the gain occurred late in the year?

Form 2210 Schedule AI may allow the annualized-income installment method so the payment pattern follows when income was actually earned.

Is there a minimum before estimated payments are required?

Yes. Estimated payments are generally not required if you expect to owe less than $1,000 after subtracting withholding and refundable credits.

Are there conditions on using the prior-year safe harbor?

Yes. The prior-year safe harbor is available only if the prior-year return covered a full 12 months and was actually filed.
