Frequently asked questions

What are the Detroit income tax rates?

Detroit levies 2.4% on residents and 1.2% on nonresidents. The nonresident rate is exactly half the resident rate, which is the standard structure for Michigan city income taxes.

Do nonresidents pay Detroit income tax?

Yes, but only on compensation for work physically performed inside the city, at the 1.2% nonresident rate. Days worked at home or at a site outside Detroit are not Detroit-taxable, so enter only the in-city portion of your pay.

What if my employer withheld Detroit tax on remote days?

A nonresident whose employer withheld city tax on days worked outside Detroit can claim the excess back by filing the nonresident city return and allocating wages by workdays. Keep a record of in-city versus out-of-city days, because the allocation must be substantiated. This calculator does not model refunds.

Does Detroit allow exemptions or deductions?

Yes. The Detroit city return allows a deduction for personal exemptions and certain other adjustments that reduce city taxable income before the rate applies. This rate-only estimate ignores them, so it will typically read slightly high for a filer claiming exemptions.

How is Detroit city income tax filed?

Detroit individual income tax returns are administered by the Michigan Department of Treasury, which processes the city return alongside the Michigan individual income tax return. Employers withhold city tax through payroll where they are registered to do so.

Is Detroit tax on top of Michigan state income tax?

Yes. Detroit city income tax is separate from and additional to Michigan state income tax and federal income tax. Michigan does not give a state credit for city income tax paid, so the amounts stack.
