Frequently Asked Questions

Which states have no sales tax?

Five states have no state sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. Note that Alaska allows local jurisdictions to impose their own sales taxes, so some areas in Alaska do have sales tax.

Are groceries taxed?

Most states exempt groceries from sales tax. However, some states tax groceries at the full rate (Alabama, Hawaii, Idaho, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Dakota) or at a reduced rate (Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia). Grocery definitions vary — prepared foods are usually taxed.

What about local sales taxes?

Many states allow cities and counties to add local sales taxes on top of the state rate. For example, the combined rate in Los Angeles, CA is 9.5% (7.25% state + 2.25% local). This calculator shows state-level rates only.

Which state has the highest sales tax?

California has the highest state-level rate at 7.25%. When combined with local taxes, Tennessee, Louisiana, Arkansas, Washington, and Alabama have some of the highest combined rates, often exceeding 9%.
