Tennessee Income Tax
Tennessee has no state income tax on wages or salaries. The state previously imposed the Hall Tax on interest and dividend income, but it was fully repealed effective January 1, 2021. Tennessee residents now pay zero state income tax on all types of income.

What You Should Know
Tennessee relies on sales tax (7% state rate, up to 9.75% with local taxes — one of the highest combined rates in the nation) and other revenue sources to fund state services. The Hall Tax, which previously taxed interest and dividend income at rates up to 6%, was phased out between 2016 and 2021. Residents still owe federal income tax and FICA taxes on their earnings.
